What We’ll Do

What does private mentorship for game design look like?

It comes in four parts, shared here on the right.

We would have a conversation prior to the start of these services to ensure this would be a good fit, and that we’d both be able to work together. I only take three mentees at a time in order to be the most effective.

If you’re interested, or even just curious about more, book a call with me below and let’s chat!

  • We’ll take a look at where your work compares with the rest of the industry, your design skills, communication skills, people skills, through a series of conversations and together identify your biggest areas of improvement, find an angle to create opportunity, and build you a plan that’ll help get you there.

  • As we work on these things, we’ll be regularly connecting through calls or chats to discuss your progress, focusing on your job search, skills training, and portfolio development.

  • Like a personal assistant, I’ll help you prioritize tasks, prepare for interviews, and review your resume and work on the regular. Do not waste your time work on the wrong things - work only on the things that will get you closer to that dream job!

Bonus: Once a month, I’ll look to connect you with my network for valuable conversations on other experts who might be in your field!

  • We’ll engage in discussions about your projects and design ideas, ensuring that your focus and efforts will be maximized.

Who I Am

My name is Kelvin, and I’ve been working in games for eight and a half years. In that time, I’ve worked mostly in AAA game companies, working on titles as mostly a level designer such as Amazon’s New World, Battlefield 2042, Plants vs Zombies, and Dragon Age: Veilguard.

During that time, I’ve learned lots about the way different teams work, how games get made, and how to survive in this career and make the most of the available opportunities. I’ve been thankful to have lots of mentor figures throughout this journey, who have all played a role in helping me build the career that I have today.

Since then I’ve been looking outwards to see how I can help support and build the next generation of designers, as those who did for me as well then. I’ve helped out at La Salle College Vancouver, helped co-found Game Design Academia, a Discord game design community, and consulted for the Infocus Film School game design program.

However, while schools do give you the tools to build a portfolio, a resume, and a small network, the competitive nature of our industry means that many times, you’re left to fend off for yourself after graduation. With little guidance after graduation, I’ve seen people give up searching for their dream jobs after a while, unsure if their efforts will bear any fruit.
